Mayor Quimby

Cocaine Princess here.

I’ll be the first to admit when it comes to Canadian politics it's pretty boring. Our elections come and go, no nasty political mud slinging ads and no scandals, until now that is. This Canadian political scandal made England's Daily Mail and The Guardian so perhaps some of my loyal readers across the border have heard about it? The city’s mayor Rob Ford has been allegedly caught on tape smoking a crack pipe with 2 Somali-Canadian drug dealers.

Two reporters from Canada's largest newspaper were contacted  to view a cellphone video taken by a drug dealer that appears to show Toronto's mayor Rob Ford smoking a crack pipe.  Pictured in the center: The city's pride and joy, aka Mayor Ford sandwiched between the two dealers.

The reporters and the paper stand by their story of viewing a video of the mayor smoking a crack pipe. The dealer is selling the footage for $200,000.

When the story hit the front page of the paper the mayor remained silent. The crack scandal saga became not just night time fodder for U.S. late-night talk show hosts like Jon Stewart and Jay Leno but even Mick Jagger who did a concert here on the weekend decided to join in on the fun by stating, We're going to crack on with the show now.

Website Gawker began a Crackstarter campaign to raise the money in order to buy the cellphone video. 8 days after the scandal the Mayor finally released a statement: “The video doesn’t exist. I do not use crack cocaine, nor am I an addict of crack cocaine.” And to further fan the flames he went onto say in regards to the media, they are a bunch of maggots.Gawker was quick to respond back: “He did not say, as one who has never smoked crack cocaine might say, ‘I have never smoked crack cocaine.” The next day Ford apologized to the media for his maggot comment.  So far his press secretary and his deputy have resigned along with 3 other staffers. Hmm, could it be they are trying to distance themselves from him?

When there's a press conference that has to do with a city related issue (such as the city's infrastructure) rather than stay on topic the press floods the mayor with questions regarding the video and whether or not he has a drug problem, to which the mayor responds by walking out of the room without saying a word. How long does he think he can continue to remain tight lipped? Does he think if he ignores the crack scandal the story will eventually get swept under the rug? He must be smoking something if he's under that impression. Gawker has reached its goal of $200,000 to buy the video but says it lost contact with the drug dealer reported to be shopping it around the previous week.

Ever since this mayor took office it’s been one scandal after the next: reading books while driving, getting caught drinking and driving, getting wasted at baseball games and abusing other fans, feeling up his colleagues and believe it or not he’s gotten away with each and everyone of them. In regards to this latest matter, I have a feeling it’s not going away anytime soon. As the press continues to cover this 24/7,  now comes news that his brother, Doug Ford, a city councilor, was a major trafficker of hashish during the 1980s, and if that isn’t bad enough, yesterday it was reported  Mayor Ford told his staffers not to worry about the video because he knows its location.

My thoughts on the whole matter? I have two. Thought #1: The journalists who viewed the video work for a legitimate and respected paper and not a sleazy tabloid so there must be some truth to it, right?  Thought #2 has more to do with his appearance in particular his weight.

I'm afraid if he continues stuffing his face with KFC he's going to burst wide open, similar to when Jaws gets blown up resulting in his guts spilling everywhere. Sheesh, his cholesterol level must be through the roof!

At this rate I think Mayor Quimby could do a better job running the city.

Did The Gardener Lie?

Cocaine Princess here.

Why is it that long weekends never seem to be long enough? One of the things I like about long weekends especially when Monday is a holiday it's that you have a short week to look forward to. Unfortunately this short week turned out to be an extremely busy one as I tried cramming one too many things in these past few days. Despite it being a busy week I did manage to squeeze some time in to post my Friday entry which I all know you look forward to. Come on admit it, you know it's true.

Do you recall back in the winter when I blogged about the senseless killing of one of our shrubs? When the shrub was first planted the gardener promised it could survive the harsh winter elements. I wasn't present during this conversation as it took place between sister and him so I'm not sure if he really said those words or not. Sister claims he did so I guess this means the gardener lied. Hmm, I may have to put sister and the gardener through a lie detector test to determine who's telling the truth.

On Tuesday it was finally removed with a chainsaw. Its' remains were first left in our backyard before being carried out to the curb on Thursday alongside our recycling bin.

I felt bad not saying a few words of condolence as it just lay there waiting to be disposed of but this post more than makes up for it. I can only hope the shrub is now in a better place, presumably happily reunited with past relatives that fell into the clutches of Mother Nature. All that's left now is an empty spot, like the one in my heart. Sister suggested we plant another in its place. Could she be anymore heartless? My God, I'm still in mourning.

I know my lovelies across the border are celebrating a long weekend, Memorial Day. Up here we don't observe Memorial Day but Remembrance Day which is held always on November 11th. Both days are dedicated to soldiers who died while serving their country. I find it interesting how very somber Remembrance Day is compared to Memorial Day. For instance, I've seen so many ads on TV including one for Macy's advertising 10% off their mattresses during the Memorial Day weekend. We don't have any Remembrance Day sales or BBQ's (but then again that could be because the wintery weather) nor are there any big movies opening but most of all it isn't a holiday. I guess it's just one more thing that makes the US more lively and colorful than Canada.....although we do have colorful currency.

British Loyalty & Alcohol

Cocaine Princess here.

It's the Long Weekend for us up here. Monday is Victoria Day or as it's commonly referred to as the May 2-4 Weekend. When I was little I never understood why it was called that because Victoria Day didn't necessarily fall on the 24th. I was then informed by a little birdie in my teens it all comes down to alcohol, where cases of beer (as in 2-4 cases) are consumed by people in the Great White North in vast quantities.

It's interesting that the Brits no longer celebrate Victoria Day yet we continue to and although it's a day to honor Queen Victoria's birthday, this weekend also marks the unofficial kickoff to summer, where patio furniture will be uncovered, BBQs will be fired up, some will be heading up to the country to open up their cottages, fireworks will be on display while others will be drinking non-stop through the entire weekend. I'm not sure what the connection is between British royalty and pulling up a lawn chair and raising a beer bottle but it's become a yearly tradition that remains strong and true.

For the past couple of years the weather on Holiday Monday has been rainy resulting in the cancellation of fireworks. Hmm, I'm beginning to wonder if Mother Nature doesn't like Queen Vicki.

My Lovelies, What Is Your Green Light?

Cocaine Princess here.

About a year ago, I blogged an entry about Baz Lurhman’s remake of The Great Gatsby with Leonardo DiCaprio in the title role of Jay Gatsby. The entry was posted on May 25th 2012. The trailer had been released a few days earlier with the film scheduled to open on Christmas Day. Then word came out the film's release date had been delayed by 5 long months. Finally that day has arrived, May 10th 2013. Excuse me while I do my happy dance......okay, I'm back.

I can't remember the last time I've been this excited about seeing a movie and I don't know why unless a severe case of Gatsby Fever has taken over me. So far the reviews from critics who caught a special screening have not been kind. According to most the movie is doomed to fail. Here's what been written:

The cardinal sin of this new "Gatsby" is that it’s dull.

Gatsby is rarely moving, and that's a major flaw for a movie that drags on for two-and-a-half hours.

The Great Gatsby" is an immortal American tragedy but gets lost in Luhrmann’s flash and dazzle.

Why is it in 3D?

I don't understand why there's so much hatred going on for the film? Could it be because some classic films should not be remade or could the reason be that many feel no one can hold a candle to both Robert Redford or Mia Farrow? I've seen the original and to be honest I preferred the book. One of the major criticisms stems from the movie's soundtrack. A movie set in the roaring 20's with Jay-Z rapping? Hmm, perhaps director Baz Lurhmann's 2013 version is for a new generation?

Last week npr.org streamed the entire soundtrack. I didn't care for Back to Black sung by Beyoncé and Andre 3000. No one can sing the song with depth or emotion like the late singer Amy Winehouse but I thought Jack White did a great job covering U2's Love Is Blindness and Lana Del Rey's Young and Beautiful is pure perfection. It's hard to say which song I liked the best however if I had to choose it would be Emeli Sandé featuring Bryan Ferry Orchestra's cover of Crazy In Love. Take a listen to the jazzy interpretation:

What I'm particularly interested in for obvious reasons of course are the decadent clothes and jewels seen throughout the film. Paying homage to the Art Deco style that was widely popular during the roaring 20's, Tiffany & Co not only provided the brilliant jewels but have released a collection for jewelery lovers. Click here if you have $220,000 to spare to purchase The Savoy Headpiece Daisy Buchanan wears.

The fabulous womens outfits designed by Prada feature all the 1920's fashion clichĂ©s: drop-waisted, rhinestone-encrusted, fringed dresses and jewel-toned, sequined accessories and although the outfits worn by the actors in the film have been described as a Princeton reunion I'm really liking the dapper looking suits. Gatsby's costume designer Catherine Martin worked in collaboration with Brooks Brothers who like Tiffany's has launched a limited edition retail collection, The Great Gatsby Line. Click here to view their collection or if you're interested in buying one of their outfits. Can any of my male readers picture themselves in a pink linen suit? Guys, forget Don Draper, it's all about Jay Gatsby old sport!

Even though his legacy will remain it's unfortunate that F. Scott Fitzgerald didn't live long enough to see his novel become one of the Greatest American Classics, so in his honor I raise my Gin Rickey and salute F. Scott.

If you recall The Great Gatsby is filled with signs and symbols and one major symbol is the Green Light at the end of Daisy’s dock. To Gatsby the green light represents his dream, which is Daisy. My Lovelies, what is your green light?

Tomorrow night I'll be seeing Leo in all his greatness. I'm literally bursting at the seams.

Dulce de Tequila

Cocaine Princess here.

To say I'm glad April is over and done with is an understatement. It wasn't a good month and in case you've forgotten why you can read about it here, here and here. Some months are like minutes and fly by while others such as the case with April, those 30 days on the calendar seemed like a frigging lifetime. It was a welcome relief when the 1st of May arrived.

I've had a busy week so do excuse this short but amazing entry of mine but before I continue any further I know some of you have been sick with worry in regards to my last post. It was nerve wracking waiting for the results of my blood test but I was brave and remained strong. Earlier in the week I met with the doctor and insert drum-roll........

.....you'll be happy to know I'm fine. I'm healthy and all is well. Knock wood. One of the things Doc Boy was concerned about (among other things) was a blood clot was responsible for the bruises. Thankfully every test turned out to be negative. As for the reason for the bruising, he really didn't have an answer other than, "sometimes the slightest little bump can cause a dark, large bruise.

This coming Sunday is Cinco de Mayo. A day to commemorate the Mexican victory over the French in the Battle of Puebla in 1862 but really it's just an excuse to have a drinkie and eat nachos, right?

I suppose it would have better had the day fallen on Friday so you could drink 'til Saturday and then spend all of Sunday nursing your hangover. Unfortunately that won't be the case.

In honor of May 5th I present:
 Dulce de Tequila

A super sweet drink, Dulce de Tequila literally means 'tequila candy' and makes a luscious dessert cocktail. Featuring Tequila TezĂłn Reposado and Martell Cognac, this drink is enhanced with the orange-flavored Cointreau and sweet agave nectar.

INGREDIENTS
2 oz Tequila TezĂłn Reposado
1 oz Martell Cognac
1 oz Cointreau
1/2 oz lime juice
1 tbsp Agave Nectar
Large-grained sugar for rimming
Lemon wedge for garnish

PREPARATION
1. Pour the ingredients into a cocktail shaker with ice.
2. Shake well.
3. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass rimmed with sugar.
4. Garnish with a lemon wedge.
