Tomatoes and The Simpsons

Last summer I blogged an entry about my housekeeper {HK} who is obsessed with infomercial products. One of the products she insisted I order for her was the “Topsy Turvy Tomato Planter.”

When the item arrived days later {she pressured me to upgrade to priority shipping because she couldn't wait the 2 to 3 weeks} HK was anxious to start right away and “explore the world of upside down gardening!"

Following the instructions perfectly we waited patiently for a “large harvest” as promised. Boy, the tomatoes sure took their sweet time growing and when they finally arrived, well let’s just say they didn’t look anything like the ones in the ad. Imagine that! Ordering a product from TV that didn’t live up to their expectation! Instead of a large harvest all that was produced was a small amount of pathetic looking, marble-size tomatoes which were all killed off one afternoon during a freak hail storm! Long story short: the tomato contraption turned out to be a major dud!

This year HK had her heart set on planting and growing her own tomatoes-- this time in the ground. Again, as I told her last summer, I didn’t see the point when she could easily drive to the grocery store and pick up as many tomatoes as she needed at any given time. Being the loving princess that I am, I gave the go ahead to have a section of the backyard dug up for her garden.  

I can honestly say what “upside down” gardening couldn't achieve all summer, the “old~fashioned way of gardening” has in a short amount of time. 

I’ll keep my lovelies posted with weekly updates and pictures because I know how much you dig my gardening entries.... See what I did there? Pretty clever I think!

And now for the alcohol portion of my entry....I was inspired to post the following drink after recently watching an episode of The Simpsons.


Today is June 7th. 14 days remain until the 1st day of summer. My lovelies, I present to you Countdown To Summer Drinkie #7:

INGREDIENTS:
*1 oz Brandy
*1 oz Peppermint Schnapps
*1 oz Sloe Gin
*1 oz Blackberry Liqueur
*1 oz Strawberry Juice
*2 tbsp. Grape Cough Syrup (Krusty Non-Narkotik Kough Syrup)

PREPARATION:
1.Pour crushed ice and all ingredients except the cough syrup in a highball glass.
2.Shake well
3.Add cough syrup.
4.Ignite and extinguish before drinking.

"Cobb's Cognac Dream"

  
Cobb's Cognac Dream is in honor of the movie Inception. The drink is quite sophisticated with a base of Courvoisier VSOP and Rosé wine. This is why you should not skimp on the rum even though it may be easy to pick up anything you have in the cupboard. A nice aged rum or one of the higher end whites works great in this drink. Have fun with whatever exotic fruits are in season at the moment.

INGREDIENTS:

*1 part Courvoisier® VSOP Cognac

*1 part Rum

*2 parts Rosé Wine

*Exotic Fruits

PREPARATION:

1.Combine all ingredients, stir and serve in a wine glass over ice.
2. Garnish with exotic fruits.

Today is June 9th. 12 days remain until the 1st day of summer. My lovelies, I present to you Countdown To Summer Drinkie #9:

"Revolutionary Rum"

"The mix combines a great rum (10 Cane), the phenomenal blood orange juice, a citrus infused simple syrup and a lime-mint foam in tribute to the movie Revolutionary Road."

INGREDIENTS:
*1 oz 10 Cane Rum
*3/4 oz blood orange puree
*1/2 oz citrus-infused simple syrup
*Lime-mint foam for garnish

PREPARATION:

1.Combine all ingredients into a mixing glass.
2.Add ice and shake vigorously.
3.Strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
4.Top with lime-mint foam.
